Bitcoin Up or Down: how short-term BTC prediction markets work
· Lucyd
A Bitcoin Up/Down market asks one question: will the BTC price be higher at the end of the round than at the start? You buy an Up or a Down token. When the round ends, the winning token pays 1 USDC and the losing one pays nothing.
On Lucyd, rounds run for 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours and 1 day. A new round of every length opens as soon as the previous one ends, so there is always a market to trade.
The strike and the result
When a round opens, it records the starting price of Bitcoin from the Pyth BTC/USD oracle. This is the strike. When the round ends, the market takes the first Pyth price published at the end time:
- price above the strike — Up wins;
- price at or below the strike — Down wins.
Both prices come from the same public oracle and are checked by a smart contract, so anyone can verify the result on-chain.
Price is probability
Up and Down tokens trade between 0 and 1 USDC. The price is the market's estimate of the chance that the outcome happens. If Up trades at 0.62, traders collectively put a 62% chance on Bitcoin finishing higher.
That makes the maths simple:
- buy 100 Up at 0.62 — you pay 62 USDC;
- Up wins — you receive 100 USDC, a profit of 38;
- Down wins — the tokens are worth 0, you lose the 62.
You don't have to hold until the end. If the price moves your way, sell the tokens back into the order book and lock in the gain, or cut a loss early.
Why short rounds
Short rounds turn a price view into a clear, limited bet: you know the maximum loss (what you paid) and the maximum payout (1 USDC per token) before you trade. There is no leverage, no liquidation and no funding rate. A 5-minute round is about momentum and news; a daily round is closer to a classic directional view.
Order book, not a house
Lucyd is an exchange, not a bookmaker. Every trade has a buyer and a seller in a central limit order book. You can place limit orders at your own price or take the best price available. Orders match off-chain, so placing and cancelling costs no gas; outcome tokens, settlement and payouts happen in smart contracts.
When a market can't settle
If the oracle publishes no price within 10 seconds of the end time, the round can't be fairly settled. It is voided, and every token, Up or Down, redeems for 0.5 USDC.
